Olympus is designed to diagnose vehicles the same way the most senior technician would, doing research and executing tests. Olympus executes the tests a technician would autonomously, and today, with Olympus Browser, it is now able to execute research fully autonomously. Without Olympus, when a technician needs to do research, they do it within proprietary OEM-paywalled portals where technical service bulletins, special service messages, and recalls are published for every dealership. Today, technicians navigate these portals manually: searching, opening workshop manuals, cross-referencing, and including the findings in their diagnostic process. We have spent the last few months watching technicians do this work manually. Seeing them do it manually is painful. It slows them down because they now have to type on a computer when they are in the middle of taking apart a vehicle to do the diagnosis.
Olympus Browser now removes this impediment for technicians. When Olympus is running a diagnostic and needs to do research, it asks the technician: do you want to do the research manually, or do you want to let Olympus do the research autonomously? With Olympus Browser, Olympus now drives the browser itself and is trained on how to navigate the OEM’s portal, execute the research needed, and incorporate the research into the diagnostic to provide the root cause to the technician.
Although it looks just like a browser a consumer would use, it’s not. Olympus Browser is not a general-purpose web browser built for consumers. It includes training specifically for Olympus to access proprietary OEM-paywalled portals, allowing them to execute the repair more quickly so they can get on to the next one. Olympus Browser’s access to OEM portals is authenticated by the technician, and the choice to use autonomous research works like the way self-driving does: you can drive manually, or you can turn on self-driving. Olympus is not fully autonomous yet. Technicians still have to prompt Olympus with the vehicle symptoms and perform the actual repair on the vehicle. Fully autonomous repairs by Olympus on vehicles are what we are building toward. Olympus Browser is an important piece in achieving this.
